A prolonged spell of injuries saw Fowler lose his regular starting place, with the emergence of Michael Owen, and under manager Gerard Houllier, he failed to gain a regular starting place as a team 'rotation' policy was implemented.

Despite being part of the 2001 Liverpool team that won the Worthington Cup,

FA and UEFA Cup, Fowler was sold to Leeds United, reportedly against his will, for £11million.

Many Liverpool fans were devastated by Fowlers departure, until January 2006, when Liverpool's manager Rafa Benitez re-signed Fowler for a second stint at his beloved Liverpool.

Although there were glimpses of his old magic, Fowler never recaptured the great form he had shown all those years earlier, and a year and a half later he made his final Liverpool appearance against Charlton, before leaving for Cardiff City on a free transfer.
