Start with a goal

This is the first of a series of posts where I will share the steps that have helped me go from building mediocre products that nobody wanted, to profitable apps that users love.

This not fluff, this is not even advice.

These are the exact steps I’ve used to go from building unloved products to #3, then #1 on Product Hunt in less than a year, with 400+ signups per month and paying customers.

And the best part is, it’s happening right now. You can follow along as I update each month at https://twitter.com/grantkiely

Find your goals

You need something to aspire to, something that will pull you out of mediocrity and will be worth the struggle.

So how do you come up with an amazing, life-changing goal?

Well I’ve got some news for you...

You probably already know what your goals are, but at some point you decided it was silly or different from everyone else and you pushed it aside.

For example: I remembered today that I wanted to learn french.

I was talking to some people from Quebec and they spoke french, and I remembered at one point I wanted to learn it.

I can’t tell you why I want to learn french, I just do. There is something about being able to speak french that speaks to me.

I pushed it aside at one point because I thought it wasn’t as practical as learning spanish or mandarin which is more popular. But I don’t really want to learn spanish or mandarin!

Just like I don’t want to build a dropshipping app, but I tried that at one point too because I thought building a SAAS app was out of my league.

It’s not out of your league and it’s not silly, it might be different but that’s because it’s YOU!

Take time

Take time and allow yourself to remember the goals that mean something to you.

It might take a little while, note it down when it happens, you will know, and you won’t need me to tell you.

As part of this process, new goals might arise and old ones may fall away. This is par for the course, once you realise a goal doesn’t actually match what you want and who you are, it will make less sense and you can trim the fat and focus on the ones that do align with what you want and who you are.

Conclusion

You don’t need to force a goal, you likely already know what your goals are but they got brushed aside at some point, or your new goals are yet to present themselves.

Take time to listen, experiment and let awareness assist you in bringing your goals to the surface.
