Examples of corporate environmental responsibility

The role corporates can play in the domain of environmental management. This is not only because of the fact corporates manage to accumulate wealth harnessing the resources offered by the environment but also because corporates are capable of bringing positive change in our collective treatment of the environment. It would be wrong to assume that only the government is responsible for fulfilling the needs of the environment especially when our civilization is undergoing the crises of global warming, climate change and rapid depletion of biodiversity. Today, corporates must include environmental management and community uplifting as their prime objectives besides profit.

The good thing is that the governments of most developing and developed nations have made environmental management and social service compulsory for the corporations. It was a decision which was welcomed by every quarter of the society and indeed, corporates have been trying to do their bit with sincerity and fulfil their corporate environmental responsibility.

There are a number of facets of corporate environmental responsibility. Broadly, it can be classified into the domains of environmental management, community uplifting and sustainability policy. The corporations which are able to distribute equal focus in all these facets receive appreciation from the people and eventually earn a good deal of market goodwill. It has been observed that often, if not always, corporates take a few unnecessary decisions to fulfil their responsibility. Those unnecessary decisions might not be actually beneficial for the environment. In fact, they might result in more damage to the environment instead of solving its problems.

Let us take the example of forestation drives. Many companies organize forestation drives as a part of their event. To give the event a shape, they decide upon an empty space and ask their employees and partners to plant trees. People participate in the event in large number and the companies attract a lot of media attention, resulting in positive marketing. However, there are several plant species which are not fit for plantation in specific soils. Plantation of some plant species might turn out to be counter-productive. If that is the case, the entire event goes into the vain. This is the reason that corporates must never take impulsive decisions when it comes to environmental care. They must consult with people who are knowledgeable in this regard and control the variety of plants which will be planted during the forestation drive.

Smart corporations fulfil their corporate environmental responsibility by partnering with reputed NGO’s who hold the knowledge and expertise about the needs of the environment. Sharing an event with an NGO is actually a good decision for a corporate as they do not run the risk of taking counter-productive decisions and can also channel their brand image through the outreach of the NGO.
